Hi,

My friend is trying to connect his PowerBook to Vodafone UMTS, but
without much success. I was hoping someone can help me to understand
the logfile and to solve the problem. Here is the relevant part from
the logfile:

Fri Dec 10 16:03:15 2004 : Connection terminated.

In particular I don't understand why server sends ConfNak here:
Fri Dec 10 16:02:39 2004 : rcvd [IPCP ConfNak id=0x2 <ms-dns1
10.11.12.13> <ms-dns3 10.11.12.14>]
Isn't it the same request the client sends?!
Thanks in advance,

Ksenia.

It looks like this instance of pppd was compiled with "DEBUG"
enabled. You probably don't want to do that.

It looks like the peer is just plain broken. It should respond with
Configure-Nak (providing an address), Configure-Reject (to say that it
doesn't know how to negotiate the IP-Address option), or LCP
Protocol-Reject (to shut down IP). It isn't responding at all.

Possible issues at this point include:

- Control-character transparency or flow control
misconfiguration. Are you sure that the set-up of this UMTS
device is correct for use with PPP?

- Weird implementation artifacts in peer. Some cellular
services seem to _lie_ to the user during authentication,
and perform the link authentication only when IPCP is
negotiated. They exhibit failures like you're seeing when
the shared secret ("password") is wrong or the username is
incorrect.

- Just plain broken peer; find another.

Yes. It's clearly a bug-ridden implementation of PPP.
