Cannot get shortcuts (links) to work when using OpenOffice 1.1

I am running Red Hat Linux 9.0 and chose not to install Open Office when I
installed it. Then I downloaded the latest version of OpenOffice 1.1 from
the Web and installed it. Everything works fine except when I create
shortcuts on the GNOME desktop to Open Office 1.1 data files. I can
double-click a shortcut to open the data file no problem, but when I make
changes and attempt to save the file I get the message "Could not create
backup copy" and the changes cannot be saved. Even specifying that I don't
want to create backups in Open Office doesn't get around the problem. In
the past I've used the earlier version of Open Office that came as part of
the Red Hat Linux distro and never had that problem. It's driving me to
distraction as I find it very convenient to be able to use shortcuts to
open data files. Any help gratefully received. TIA. John.

I "think" this is the way to do it .. at least this worked for me when I upgraded to 1.1 ... I installed OO as root after logoff as dave (me - user) and logon as root (me -root). The OO readme file has some instructions about where and how to install, such as make install -net (using the "net" option ... but don't do this until you actually read the readme files. Then, after install as root, I logon as me and did a user install -- the instructions on how to do that are in the readme package. THen I clicked on the icon's properties on my user desktop and selected the OO icon (the install process didn't make the butterfly icon). HTH, YMMV Cheers, Dave

Thanks for the info. Dave. Have experimented some more & it actually seems like a bug in OpenOffice 1.1 as links I create to data files created with other programs work OK in every way. Thanks for your efforts. Regards, John
